Thrifty Bookshelf Drawers

After two weeks of working a little here and there on this project,  it’s finally complete! YAY! I bought two small bookshelves from Walmart about 6 months ago that were on both sides of my couch. But now that I’ve replaced one of them with my desk (new post coming soon on how I made the desk) I had to move one to my bedroom and decided to add a little more functionality to it =) So after brainstorming I decided to make some drawers for it.

I bought an 4′x8′ piece of 1/8″ cardboard from the packaging shop that I work at (also my sponsor American Wall Shelves).  I cut out 3 boxes for the top shelf and 2 boxes for the middle shelf.

I made sure to make them a few inches too tall and folded them over inside so that they were smooth and gorilla glued them pressed with a bunch of books.

I wanted to make sure they were as strong as possible, so I used some packaging tape from my shop to re-secure the seams in the boxes. Then I cut out handles in each box.

Then I painted them all with some cream paint I had. I didn’t paint the bottoms because I didn’t want then to stick to the shelf. After the paint was dried I took some cute scrapbook paper I had and cut out 5″x6″ pieces, with and X cut out where the handle was so that it would wrap through the handle hole and also over the top. I used hot glue to secure the paper on (I really wish I had some Mod Podge, I think it would have been a lot better for this).

Here’s how they are in the bookshelf:

Once my son saw me taking pictures he ran in and started posing so I thought I’d throw one of them in (he’s nearly naked because we had just finished playing in the rain…. ahhh, I love desert rain). He gets his gorgeous blue eyes from his daddy =)
